Knockando Woollen Mill

By creating exclusive, small batch yarns and fabrics for today’s luxury market, we are securing the future of the methods, skills, traditions and knowledge that have existed on this beautiful Scottish heritage site, since 1784.

Knockando Woolmill sits in the Spey Valley, on the same site it has occupied for over 230 years. Here you’ll find contemporary designs woven alongside traditional tweeds and classic woollen blankets — produced with the same attention to detail and craftsmanship championed by the Woolmill since the beginning.

Knockando Woolmill was first listed as the 'Wauk Mill' in 1784, and was the heart of the local community, where farmers would bring their fleeces to be converted into fabric or knitting yarn. As the industrial revolution crept north, the Woolmill mechanised the labour-intensive processes of carding and spinning that had previously been done by hand. It’s one of the last district mills of its kind, passed down through generations of families up until 2000. By then, the strain of continuous production had taken its toll, and a fundamental overhaul was needed to save the Grade A listed site from ruin. A Trust was set up and after a 12 year restoration project is once again fully operational.

Open seasonally since 2012, you can experience a working Woolmill and witness the Victorian Dobcross looms that have been painstakingly rebuilt, purchase small batch yarns, accessories and soft furnishings that secure the methods, skills and knowledge that have existed on this beautiful Scottish heritage site, since 1784.
